Cold-weather EV range: what AAA's 2026 test can tell drivers

AAA measured a 39% average calculated-range reduction at 20°F across three tested EVs. The test is a useful warning against optimistic route plans, not a calculator for every car.

What is confirmed

Temperature, cabin heating and battery conditioning can materially change range. Use the vehicle's current estimate and a backup stop instead of subtracting one universal percentage.

What AAA tested

AAA published its temperature study on May 1, 2026. The organization tested three model-year 2025 battery-electric vehicles—a Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD, Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD and Tesla Model Y RWD—on a chassis dynamometer at 20°F, 75°F and 95°F. Cabin climate control was set to 72°F.

Across those three vehicles, calculated driving range averaged 39.0% lower at 20°F than at 75°F. At 95°F, it averaged 8.5% lower. Those figures describe this test sample and protocol. They should not be applied as a guaranteed loss for every EV, trim, trip or temperature.

Why cold conditions change the trip

An EV uses stored energy to heat the cabin and manage battery temperature. Cold can also affect the battery and other vehicle systems. The EPA warns that cold weather, accessory use and high-speed driving can significantly reduce range.

The same conditions can slow charging. EPA guidance recommends using the vehicle's built-in navigation to route to a fast charger when that function prepares the battery for charging. Preconditioning behavior varies by vehicle, so the owner's manual and vehicle settings remain the right reference.

A safer cold-weather charging plan

Plan with the vehicle you are actually driving. Start with its current state of charge and route estimate, then consider temperature, speed, elevation and the distance to the backup charger. A warm garage, battery preconditioning and a long highway leg produce a different result from repeated short trips in severe cold.

Do not continue toward an isolated charger solely because the dashboard once showed enough miles. Recheck the projected arrival charge during the trip. If the reserve is eroding, use an earlier compatible stop while alternatives remain available.

  • Charge before entering the sparse part of the route.
  • Use the vehicle's navigation for supported battery preconditioning.
  • Check the charging network's current status and access requirements.
  • Save the location of a second compatible site and the vehicle maker's roadside number.
