Rivian R2 range: wheel choice changes the figure by 23 miles
Rivian's September wheel guide gives the R2 Launch Package 330 EPA-rated miles on its all-season setup and 307 on its all-terrain setup.
The 23-mile difference is tied to the published wheel-and-tire configurations. A model name alone is not enough for planning a rural charging stop.
The published range difference
Rivian's September 11 guide lists two wheel-and-tire packages for the R2 Launch Package. The 21-inch all-season package is rated at 330 EPA miles, while the 20-inch all-terrain package is rated at 307 miles. Rivian describes the difference as 23 miles, or about seven percent.
The wheel diameter alone does not explain the result. Rivian pairs the 21-inch wheel with a Pirelli Scorpion MS all-season tire and the 20-inch wheel with a BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A all-terrain tire. The more aggressive tread provides different off-road characteristics and rolling behavior.
What EPA-rated range can—and cannot—tell you
EPA range is a standardized comparison figure. It is useful for comparing the configurations, but it is not a promise that either vehicle will cover exactly that distance on a particular trip.
The EPA explains that its label process adjusts laboratory city and highway testing for real-world factors. Rivian also notes that tires, drive modes, weather, climate settings and accessories affect actual range. Highway speed, wind, elevation, temperature and vehicle load matter when the next charger is distant.
- Confirm the exact battery, trim, wheels and tires—not only the model.
- Plan the next stop with a reserve rather than treating the rated figure as usable-to-zero range.
- Recheck estimates after temperature, route elevation or load changes.
- Identify a second compatible charging stop before entering a sparse corridor.
Why this matters to roadside planning
A 23-mile rated difference can be immaterial in a well-served metro area and consequential on a route with one practical charging stop. The right decision depends on where the vehicle will be driven and how much redundancy the charging route provides.
The range difference is not evidence of a defect or misleading claim. It is an example of why new-model coverage should name the complete configuration and distinguish an official estimate from an independent road test.
