When roadside help may be enough
- The vehicle is close to a publicly maintained road
- A recovery vehicle has safe access and a secure anchor point
- There is no apparent collision or underbody damage
When a tow is the safer option
- The vehicle rolled, struck an object or sustained damage
- It is far off-road or in deep water, a ravine or unstable ground
- Recovery would leave it unsafe to drive
What to tell the provider
Clear information helps a dispatcher send the right vehicle and equipment. Provide:
- Surface conditions and how far the vehicle is from the road
- Vehicle size, weight and drivetrain
- Whether wheels turn and the vehicle can steer
- Any visible damage or hazards
Check coverage before service begins
Roadside plans and providers impose different mileage, labor, vehicle and parts limits. Ask what is included, the destination, total estimated charge and accepted payment method before authorizing work.
